The software or computer program receives the treatment given to the copyright protection regime and is regulated in Brazil through law 9.609/98.

Although registration is optional, it is highly recommended to facilitate proof of creation and paternity, the creation of assignment and license agreements, the repression of infractions in case of litigation, the transfer of rights in the cases of succession and inventory and the offer as guarantee in credit operations.

It is also possible to apply for the protection of software implemented patents, when the technical solution uses software as part of the system claimed in the invention.
